Osteopathic Medicine Pathway Program

Students interested in a career as a physician are invited to apply for admission to the Florida Tech/Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine Osteopathic Medicine Pathway Program (OMPP), open to 50 students per year.

This exclusive program creates a pathway to medical school admission for select students strongly committed to osteopathic medicine and bringing healthcare access and excellence to underserved populations. Students admitted to the OMPP will receive comprehensive programming designed to hone their skills and ignite their passions as future physicians.

Florida Tech students accepted into the OMPP will:

  • Work with a mentor, receiving personalized guidance.
  • Access to exclusive events.
  • Interact with physicians, educators and students from Burrell College.
  • Apply and be accepted directly into the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine program at Burrell College upon successful completion of their bachelor's degree from Florida Tech and successful completion of the OMPP.

Requirements to Apply to the OMPP - Freshmen

  1. Be a currently enrolled, full-time freshman* student at Florida Tech.
  2. Have a cumulative science GPA of 3.0 or higher and cumulative overall GPA of 3.25 or higher.
  3. Agree to the Burrell College Minimal Technical Standards set forth in the Burrell College Catalog for the admission cycle in which the candidate is applying to Burrell College
  4. Agree to comply with Burrell College admission requisites set forth in the Burrell College Catalog for the admission cycle in which the candidate is applying to Burrell College, including but not limited to citizenship or permanent resident status, passing criminal history checks, drug screenings, and immunization records.
  5. Have no prior academic or legal sanctions, infractions, probations, conduct violations, misdemeanors, disciplinary actions or felonies.

Submitting Your Application

Submit your completed application (as one complete packet) to Florida Tech.

All packets must be postmarked and mailed or hand-delivered to Dr. Nunes at Florida Tech by 5:00 p.m. EST on March 29, 2024.

Applying to the OMPP

Applications are submitted through the designated OMPP representative at Florida Tech. Candidates must submit a completed Florida Tech/BCOM OMPP application between Jan. 1 and the last business day of March during their freshman year at Florida Tech.

The OMPP application must include:

  1. Personal statement on why the student wishes to pursue a career in osteopathic medicine, not to exceed 5,000 characters (including spaces).
  2. Two letters of recommendation:
    • Written by an academic adviser, science professor, employment supervisor, high school teacher, or volunteer work supervisor.
    • Printed on official letterhead (when available) and submitted by the referees directly to the OMPP representative at Florida Tech.

All application materials are received and processed by Florida Tech's OMPP representative. Qualified applicants will be considered for entry into the OMPP. Final selections for entry into the OMPP are based on the outlined criteria and will be at the discretion of the selection committee made up of representatives from both Florida Tech and Burrell College. If admitted into the OMPP, participants must maintain set criteria during their time at Florida Tech in order to remain eligible for final acceptance into the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine program at BCOM. If set criteria are not met, the participant will be removed from the OMPP.

Maintaining OMPP Eligibility

Florida Tech students accepted into the OMPP must:

  1. Attend joint planning sessions with the Florida Tech OMPP representative and Burrell College's office of admission after grades are posted at the conclusion of each spring semester.
  2. Attend planning sessions with the Florida Tech OMPP representative before registration each semester.
  3. Maintain full-time enrollment status with at least 15 semester hours at Florida Tech each semester; complete a bachelor's degree in a maximum of four years.
  4. Achieve a cumulative science and overall GPA of 3.25 on a 4.0 scale in their first and second years of the OMPP (sophomore and junior years).
  5. Achieve a cumulative science and overall GPA of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale at the time of graduation.
  6. Complete all requisite coursework set forth in the Burrell College Catalog for the admission cycle in which the candidate is applying to Burrell College with a grade of "B" or higher on the first attempt at Florida Tech.
  7. Sign a letter of commitment to Burrell College during junior year at Florida Tech.
  8. Receive a score of 500 or higher, with no sub-sections lower than the 15th percentile, on the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT).
  9. Accrue relevant medical, non-medical, and community volunteer experience; a minimum of 100 hours of medical experience.
  10. Remain in good legal and academic standing (any sanctions, infractions, probations, conduct violations, misdemeanors or felonies, disciplinary actions, etc. must be reported to the OMPP representative immediately for review).
  11. Agree to the Burrell College Minimal Technical Standards set forth in the Burrell College Catalog for the admission cycle in which the candidate is applying to Burrell College.
  12. Agree to comply with Burrell College admission requisites set forth in the Burrell College Catalog for the admission cycle in which the candidate is applying to Burrell College, including but not limited to citizenship or permanent resident status, passing criminal history checks, drug screenings, and immunization records.

If at any time an OMPP participant does not meet the set criteria or standards, the participant will be removed from the OMPP. Participants removed from the OMPP will be notified and will receive exit advising. Such students will remain eligible to apply to Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine via the AACOMAS Application.

Final Application to Burrell College

In their senior year, OMPP participants must apply to Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine through AACOMAS, the centralized online application service for osteopathic medical schools in the U.S. and designate Burrell College. Students invited to complete the secondary application will provide their preferred campus, either New Mexico or Florida. At this time, they must meet all admission requirements set forth in the Burrell College Catalog for the admission cycle in which the candidate is applying, including any requirements that may not be specifically disclosed in OMPP documents, and follow the set admission process, including an interview and review by the Burrell College Medical Student Admissions Selections Committee.

Students not participating in the OMPP should apply for admission to Burrell College via AACOMAS and contact the Burrell College Office of Admissions with any questions.
