General Engineering Program

Explore Different Engineering Fields and Complete Coursework For Career Path

Florida Tech's College of Engineering is known internationally for its dynamic, challenging and rewarding degree programs. First-year students interested in engineering but still deciding on a major may elect to enroll in the general engineering program option. These students have the flexibility to explore different fields while completing engineering courses important to all degrees, keeping them on track to later continue in the degree program of their choice in the College of Engineering.

The general engineering program includes solid course work in chemistry, calculus, physics and computer science, which gives students a chance to see where their strengths and interests lie. Whether it is civil, electrical, aerospace, mechanical engineering, oceanography, construction management, or environmental science, the first-year exploratory program sets the course for students in the general engineering program. Students are expected to select a degree program once 30 credit hours of coursework are completed.

Gain Practical Experience

A Florida Tech education means personal attention, an interdisciplinary learning environment and opportunity for undergraduate research and publication. Our low student-to-faculty ratio encourages close collaboration and mentorship as well as individual creativity and leadership. General engineering program students soon find the type of mentorship and guidance they need to determine the engineering degree they want to pursue.

After enrolling in the general engineering program and selecting a major, new opportunities for internships, research and co-op experiences are available as part of their degree program. The hallmark of a Florida Tech engineering degree is the capstone student design project, a degree requirement for all undergraduate students involving an interdisciplinary lesson in engineering to design, build and present on an engineering topic of their choosing. Students present the projects to industry leaders and employers, and may compete in international competitions.

The ProTrack Engineering Co-op allows qualified engineering students to complete up to three semester-long paid work experiences related to their major and career interests while still earning a bachelor's degree in four years. After starting out in the general engineering program, these additional learning experiences are very valuable for student resumes.

Build Professional Relationships

Engineering students also have an opportunity to build leadership and professional experience through internships and research projects, as well as through participation in academic organizations, performance groups, intramural sports, student government, and over 100 other student organizations.

Get Recruited Upon Graduation

Many students at Florida Tech that begin their college career in the general engineering program go on to complete a degree and get recruited by employers such as General Electric, Environmental Protection Agency, NASA, Harris Corporation, Sea World and Microsoft.

Earn an Advanced Degree

Engineering majors also go on to graduate programs in their field at Florida Tech and other prestigious universities, including MIT, Johns Hopkins, Virginia Tech and Yale.

A Well Respected University

Florida Tech is ranked a Tier One Best National University by U.S. News & World Report and has been named among the "Best in the Southeast" by Princeton Review. Washington Monthly also ranks Florida Tech a Barron's Guide "Best Buy," and the top private university in Florida. Undergraduates attending Florida Tech also benefit from engineering programs that are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET including:

  • Aerospace
  • Chemical
  • Civil
  • Computer
  • Electrical
  • Mechanical
  • Ocean
  • Software

The undergraduate computer science program is accredited by ABET's Computing Accreditation Commission.
