What Education Research or Other Opportunities Can I Expect?

Preparing graduate students for a career in education involves more than just classroom study—students need experiences that enhance and develop their skills beyond the curriculum, including internships, research, and exposure to professional association meetings and conferences. Florida Tech offers these types of experiences to give every student a hands-on way to prepare for their future career, and encourages them to submit their research findings for publication in professional journals and/or present them at professional annual meetings, including national and state STEM organizations and other professional education organizations related to the student’s subject matter and grade-level interest, including the National Science Teachers Association, the Southern Association for Science Teacher Education, and the National Association for Research in Science Teaching.

Research Opportunities

Graduate students earning a master of education use research opportunities to develop learning, teaching, management, and assessment expertise. Research is a top priority at Florida Tech, providing students with a myriad of options to not only customize their research projects to their areas of interest, but also provide opportunities to work with state and professional organizations and local companies. As a leading research university, Florida Tech is committed to advancing ideas in research and providing the opportunity for teachers to test new teaching styles and use new content and materials in their classrooms. Professors work alongside students to choose from either thesis and non-thesis research topics to match their preferred study curriculum and build methods of evaluation. Additionally, students earning a master of education can work with state organizations in STEM areas of interest as well as with other professional educational organizations to build their expertise.

Teachers also have options for education careers from public, private, or technical schools, virtual classrooms, training and development, and adult literacy to many fields emerging in special education, experience coordinators (working with students in community-based job experiences), transition services (training for new careers), and more. Advance Your Current Career or Pursue Administrative Positions

With a master of education degree graduates find positions as primary, secondary or post-secondary education teachers or administrators. According to the bureau, the outlook for education careers is projected to grow 12% through 2022, due to factors such as reduced student-teacher ratios and expanding population.

Doctoral Programs

In addition to the options for education careers, some graduates continue their education at Florida Tech to obtain an EdS or PhD. On average, graduates with an advanced degree have higher salaries and employment rates than those with a master’s or bachelor’s degree, according to the BLS.
